Tier 3

Tier 3, the BHLP Community Fellows, focuses on community leadership and engaged citizenship. As a community fellow, I had the honor to be partnered with the nonprofit, inDEFINED.

inDEFINED

The inDEFINED initiative was launched in 2017 by Bryan Terrell Clark and Robert Reader to teach young people to define themselves from within through exposure to the arts. Since its start, inDEFINED has worked with community partners in NYC to run arts classes, hosted a pop up shop to sell their merchandise, and fundraised to support other philanthropic missions. However, along the way they strayed away from their initial vision. Our team was partnered with inDEFINED and their board Bryan Terrell Clark, Robert Reader, and Amanda Cuomo-Cole, to reevaluate the mission and get the nonprofit back on track.

Our first task after being partnered with inDEFINED was to complete a SWOT analysis. We thoroughly researched the nonprofit through frequent meetings with the board, interviewing each of the board members, and learning more about other nonprofits doing similar work to serve as benchmarks. During this process we obtained a lot of valuable information from the board about what the original plan was, their new goals for inDEFINED, and everything that has already been done in terms of finances, branding, location, etc. Everything we learned about inDEFINED allowed us to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the organization and develop a series of projects for the second half of the year. A summary of our work and the SWOT itself can be found in the inDEFINED SWOT analysis below.

After a few pivots, our team completed our project for inDEFINED as outlined in the inDEFINED Final Project. Our final project focused on revamping the mission statement and developing a plan to start building the nonprofit up from there. We started with a market scan to identify gaps in what is already available for inDEFINED to fill and to look for potential partners. From there, we finalized a new mission statement with the board to provide a strong foundation for the rest of the steps. We looked into social media and branding techniques to increase awareness of inDEFINED, how to become an official 501c3 nonprofit, developed a strategic plan for the future of the nonprofit, and created a visual deck to convert information to potential partners, team members, and stakeholders.

The year's work with inDEFINED is summarized in our inDEFINED Final Presentation.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with inDEFINED and this amazing team of people. After the completion of Tier 3, I continued on with inDEFINED as my Tier 4 distinction project where we are continuing to build off of the work we already did and put into action some of the plans.

The experience of Tier 3 taught me infinitely more about how to work effectively on a team including coming out on top when we experience rough patches. As the project lead, I was able to transfer all the skills I acquired to other projects I became the leader of and help them go smoothly such as my Engineering Junior Design project. The course material itself provided me with more information and experience on things I do as an engineering major such as benchmarking. It also opened my eyes to how organizations are run and I now find myself looking into different businesses or nonprofits mission statements to see if they align with my own values. The reading material also opened my eyes to many different paths that I can take in my future and gave me the tools to succeed in this course, project, and at UD in general.
